Liverpool Launch Title Defence With Thrilling 4-2 Victory Over Bournemouth At Anfield.

Premier League champions Liverpool kicked off their 2025/26 title defence with a dramatic 4-2 win against Bournemouth at Anfield on Friday, 15 August 2025, in a match that blended breathtaking football with emotional tributes and a troubling off-field incident. The pulsating encounter, marking the opening fixture of the new season, saw the Reds overcome a spirited Bournemouth comeback to secure three points, with late strikes from Federico Chiesa and Mohamed Salah sealing the victory.

The match began with Liverpool asserting early dominance, as new signing Hugo Ekitike opened the scoring in the 37th minute on his Premier League debut. The former Paris Saint-Germain striker capitalised on a fortunate ricochet off Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi, slotting calmly past goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Just three minutes into the second half, Ekitike turned provider, holding up play to set up Cody Gakpo, who cut inside and fired into the bottom corner to make it 2-0. Liverpool’s attacking flair, bolstered by summer signings Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez, appeared to have the game under control.

However, the match took a dramatic turn as Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo spearheaded a stunning fightback. The Ghanaian winger, who earlier reported an alleged racist comment from the crowd to referee Anthony Taylor in the 28th minute, responded with two superb goals. His first, in the 64th minute, came from a pinpoint cross by David Brooks, which Semenyo finished past Alisson Becker. His second, a sensational solo effort in the 77th minute, saw him twist past Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk before rifling a low shot into the corner, levelling the score at 2-2. The alleged racist incident, which prompted a brief pause in play, is under investigation by the Premier League, with Semenyo’s resilience earning widespread admiration.

With Anfield on edge, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot turned to his bench, and substitute Federico Chiesa proved the game-changer. In the 88th minute, the Italian volleyed home exquisitely after Petrovic parried a dangerous Salah delivery, restoring Liverpool’s lead at 3-2. The Reds’ talisman, Mohamed Salah, then sealed the victory in the 94th minute with his 10th opening-day Premier League goal, a clinical strike into the bottom corner that sparked wild celebrations. Salah’s goal also saw him cement his record as the competition’s top scorer on matchday one, with 10 goals and 15 combined goal involvements.

The match was steeped in emotion, as Anfield paid heartfelt tributes to former player Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who tragically died in a car crash in Spain on 3 July. Fans displayed placards spelling out “DJ20” and “AS30” in the stands, and players from both sides wore black armbands during a pre-match moment of silence. Supporters’ renditions of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” resonated throughout, with Salah visibly moved at full-time.

Despite defensive frailties—highlighted by Jamie Carragher’s critique of a “lack of balance”—Liverpool’s attacking prowess carried the day. Ekitike’s goal and assist earned plaudits, while Chiesa’s impact off the bench underlined the squad’s depth. Bournemouth, depleted by the summer departures of key defenders like Kerkez and Ilya Zabarnyi, showed fight but were undone by Liverpool’s late surge. Manager Andoni Iraola praised Semenyo’s “electrifying” performance but lamented his side’s inability to hold firm.

The victory sets Liverpool up for a blockbuster clash against Newcastle United on 25 August, while Bournemouth face Wolverhampton Wanderers next Saturday. As the Reds navigate a refreshed squad and heightened expectations, this thrilling opener suggests Arne Slot’s side remains a formidable force in their quest to retain the Premier League crown.
