Macron Reveals Talks With Tinubu, Warns That “No One Can Remain A Spectator” In Terrorism Fight

Macron affirms France’s solidarity with Nigeria and urges international partners to intensify their engagement.

French President, Emmanuel Macron has confirmed that he recently spoke with Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with their conversation focusing squarely on the escalating terrorist threat in Northern Nigeria. The disclosure, made in a statement posted on his official X account, underscores France’s growing concern about the deteriorating security situation in West Africa’s most populous nation.

Macron said he used the call to express France’s solidarity with Nigeria at a time when the country faces intensifying attacks from terrorist groups, bandit networks, and armed criminal gangs. According to him, the French people “stand in solidarity” with Nigerians confronting insecurity on multiple fronts.

“I spoke with President Tinubu of Nigeria, @officialABAT,” Macron wrote. “I conveyed France’s solidarity in the face of the various security challenges, particularly the terrorist threat in the North.”

The French leader revealed that Tinubu specifically requested strengthened cooperation from France as Nigeria seeks to curb extremist violence and stabilise affected communities. In response, Macron pledged that France would increase its support to Nigerian authorities and deepen assistance to populations ravaged by terrorism, kidnappings, and recurring attacks.

“At his request, we will strengthen our partnership with the authorities and our support for the affected populations,” Macron said. “We call on all our partners to step up their engagement. No one can remain a spectator.”

A Call With Regional Implications

The phone conversation comes at a moment of heightened anxiety across northern Nigeria, where extremist groups continue to stage kidnappings, raids on villages, and assaults on security formations. Recent weeks have seen an uptick in violence, overwhelming local security structures and straining humanitarian resources.

Analysts note that our internal security crisis has regional consequences, including displacement, cross-border arms trafficking, and the strengthening of transnational extremist networks. Macron’s strong-worded declaration that “no one can remain a spectator” is widely interpreted as a call for broader international engagement in stabilising the region.

France’s Next Steps

Although Macron did not list specific operational commitments, France’s renewed support is expected to include enhanced intelligence sharing, training for Nigerian security forces, logistical assistance, and humanitarian aid for affected communities. This approach aligns with France’s evolving West Africa strategy, which now prioritises cooperation at the request of local governments rather than unilateral deployments.

For Nigeria, the pledge of support from a major international partner comes at a critical time, offering potential reinforcement for counterterrorism operations and relief efforts.

Looking Ahead

The Macron–Tinubu conversation adds new momentum to international involvement in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism. Whether this renewed partnership will translate into tangible improvements on the ground will depend on sustained coordination, clear operational frameworks, and the ability of Nigerian authorities to integrate external support with domestic reforms.

For now, Macron’s message is unmistakable: the global community cannot afford to watch from the sidelines.
