Officers also discovered an angle grinder—a handheld power tool often used for cutting or grinding—in the suspects’ suitcase, raising suspicions of a planned burglary. The two individuals, of Tunisian origin and known to authorities, are now under investigation for theft by an organised gang, with the case handed to the Paris Banditry Repression Brigade (BRB).
The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed on Monday, 1 September, that the arrests were made during a standard inspection at the bustling train station. “The discovery of such high-value items hidden in such an unusual manner underscores the audacity of the suspects,” a police source told Le Parisien. Reports suggest the pair may have travelled to Switzerland last month, and investigators are exploring whether the jewellery is linked to a recent burglary.
