Phil Foden delivered a standout performance, scoring and providing an assist as Manchester City claimed their first Champions League victory of the season with a dominant 4-0 win over Slovan Bratislava.
The England midfielder, who has struggled to recapture the form that saw him crowned PFA Player of the Season last year, made the most of his second start this term. After Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring in the eighth minute with a deflected effort, Foden doubled City’s lead just seven minutes later with a cool finish into the bottom corner.
City continued to exert control, hitting the woodwork three times through Jeremy Doku, Foden, and Gundogan. Erling Haaland then added his 11th goal of the season just before the hour mark, calmly rounding Slovan goalkeeper Dominik Takac to slot the ball home.
Foden’s creativity shone again as he set up substitute James McAtee with a clever flick, allowing the 21-year-old to score his first goal for the club in the 74th minute. City manager Pep Guardiola praised McAtee’s contribution, stating: “All of us are so happy for him. For him, it will be a good boost. Hopefully today can help him feel more part of the group.”
Despite Slovan Bratislava’s spirited efforts, including a near miss from Marko Tolic early on, they were unable to halt City’s relentless attack. Goalkeeper Takac made several heroic saves to prevent an even greater defeat for the hosts, but the reigning Premier League champions proved too strong.
This victory marks City’s first win in the revamped Champions League format, following their opening draw against Inter Milan. Guardiola made six changes from the side that drew with Newcastle in the Premier League, and the performance from midfield duo Gundogan and Foden was particularly promising.
Gundogan, captaining the side for the first time since City’s Treble-winning 2023 Champions League final, opened the scoring and nearly added to his tally with a rasping shot that struck the bar. The 34-year-old could play a crucial role this season, especially following Rodri’s season-ending injury.
For Foden, his goal and assist offer hope of a return to his best form. After a series of injuries and illness sidelined him earlier this season, the England international had struggled for game time, often starting from the bench. Guardiola, however, remains confident in Foden’s ability: “He still is not at his best, but step by step he’s coming back.”
