Manchester United Confirm Signing Of Matheus Cunha from Wolves In £62.5m Deal

Manchester United Confirm Signing Of Matheus Cunha from Wolves In £62.5m Deal.

Manchester United have officially completed the signing of Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers, marking their first acquisition of the summer transfer window. The 26-year-old, who has signed a five-year contract with an option for an additional year, joins the Red Devils for a club-record £62.5 million, paid in three instalments over two years, after United triggered the release clause in his Wolves contract.

Cunha, a versatile forward capable of playing as a No. 10 or across the front line, expressed his delight at fulfilling a lifelong dream. “It is hard to put into words my feelings about becoming a Manchester United player,” Cunha told the club’s media channels. “Ever since I was a child in Brazil watching Premier League games at my grandmother’s house, United was my favourite English team, and I dreamed of wearing the red shirt. I can’t wait to get started and help get this club back to the top.”

The transfer, finalised on 12 June 2025, follows weeks of negotiations, with United initially seeking to spread the payment over five years before agreeing to Wolves’ terms of three instalments. Cunha underwent a medical in Manchester before joining Brazil for World Cup qualifiers, with the deal subject to visa and registration processes expected to be completed upon his return.

Cunha’s arrival is a significant coup for manager Rúben Amorim, who prioritised the Brazilian to bolster United’s attack after a disappointing 2024/25 Premier League campaign, where they finished 15th and scored just 44 goals. Cunha’s 15 Premier League goals and six assists last season, despite missing six matches due to suspensions, far surpassed United’s top scorers, Bruno Fernandes and Amad, who managed eight each. His ability to play in Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 system, often as a dynamic No. 10, makes him an ideal fit, bringing creativity, ball-carrying flair, and a clinical edge.

“Cunha’s signing is a statement of intent,” said Jason Wilcox, United’s director of football. “He has proven his ability in the Premier League and across Europe, and his versatility and goalscoring prowess will be vital as we build a dynamic, competitive team.”

Cunha’s journey to Old Trafford began in João Pessoa, Brazil, where he honed his skills in futsal before moving to Swiss club Sion in 2017. Spells at RB Leipzig, Hertha Berlin, and Atlético Madrid followed, but it was at Wolves, where he joined on loan in January 2023 before a £43m permanent move, that he truly shone. Scoring 33 goals in 92 appearances, including a memorable hat-trick against Chelsea and an ‘Olimpico’ goal against United, Cunha became Wolves’ talisman and Players’ Player of the Season.

Despite his flair and 60% big-chance conversion rate—higher than stars like Mohamed Salah and Cole Palmer—concerns linger about his temperament, with two suspensions last season for incidents against Ipswich Town and Bournemouth. However, his ability to unlock defences and drive forward fits Amorim’s vision for a high-energy attack.

Fans have welcomed the signing with enthusiasm, with posts on X describing Cunha as a “game-changer” and “perfect for Amorim’s system.” One supporter wrote, “Cunha’s flair and goals are exactly what we’ve been missing. Welcome to United!” Gary Neville, a United legend, praised the move, noting, “Cunha’s the type of player who suits Amorim’s system—risk-taking, creative, and lethal in the final third.”

As United prepare for their pre-season tour in the USA, starting with a match against West Ham United on 26 July, Cunha’s signing signals the start of a squad overhaul aimed at restoring the club’s glory. With potential departures like Marcus Rashford and Antony to free up funds, more signings may follow. For now, Cunha’s arrival has ignited optimism among the Old Trafford faithful.
