Segun Odegbami, former captain of the Super Eagles, recently shed light on Manchester United’s refusal to participate in a friendly match at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos, Nigeria.
According to Odegbami, the Red Devils declined the invitation to face an undisclosed team at the stadium, citing concerns over the playing surface.
During an appearance on Arise TV, Odegbami emphasized the importance of upgrading the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) to elevate it to the next level.
He advocated for the enhancement of playing surfaces, advocating for natural grass pitches similar to those found in European football stadiums.
Reflecting on his past experiences, Odegbami recalled negotiating with Manchester United during his tenure with Globacom.
However, when the discussion turned to the venue of the match, specifically the Teslim Balogun Stadium’s artificial turf, Manchester United expressed reluctance to participate.
Odegbami highlighted the significance of grass turfs, attributing Manchester United’s decision to the absence of natural grass at the stadium.
He underscored the importance of quality playing surfaces, citing his involvement in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) as further evidence of the necessity for grass pitch.
