Manchester United Salvage Draw At Everton With Late VAR Drama.
Manchester United staged a dramatic second-half comeback to secure a 2-2 draw against Everton at Goodison Park, with VAR playing a crucial role in denying the hosts a last-minute penalty.
Everton, thriving under the returning David Moyes, dominated the first half and looked set for a convincing victory. Beto opened the scoring in the 19th minute after a goalmouth scramble, before Abdoulaye Doucoure capitalised on a defensive lapse to double their lead before half-time. Harry Maguire found himself at fault, failing to react swiftly as Doucoure outjumped him to head home.
For much of the match, United looked devoid of creativity and urgency. However, a moment of brilliance from Bruno Fernandes in the 72nd minute gave them hope, as he expertly curled a free-kick past the Everton defence. Eight minutes later, Manuel Ugarte powered in a strike to bring United level.
Late drama ensued when referee Andrew Madley awarded Everton a penalty after Ashley Young went down under a challenge from Maguire, with Matthijs de Ligt also involved in the tussle. However, a VAR review overturned the decision, leaving the hosts frustrated.
Despite Everton’s strong showing, they ultimately let their lead slip, and the draw leaves them just one point ahead of 15th-placed United. While Moyes’ side will rue missed opportunities, United’s late rally spared manager Rúben Amorim from yet another damaging defeat.
The result does little to ease the pressure on United, but their spirited fightback provides a glimmer of hope amid a difficult season.
