Maresca Slams Chelsea’s Lack Of Consistency After Sunderland Shock

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has criticised his players following their unexpected 2-1 defeat to newly promoted Sunderland at Stamford Bridge.

The loss came as a major setback for the Blues, just weeks after an impressive victory over reigning champions Liverpool, leaving Maresca frustrated with his team’s inconsistency.

Speaking after the match, Maresca admitted he was struggling to understand how his side could deliver such contrasting performances in a short span of time. “We were not good enough, and in the Premier League the consequences can be bad,” the Italian coach said. He added that consistency was key for any side hoping to challenge for top honours, noting that Chelsea’s fluctuating form was worrying. “If we can have that level and this level, probably it’s better to have something in between to be always in the same way,” he stated.

Chelsea started the game brightly, taking the lead in the fourth minute through Alejandro Garnacho, who latched onto Pedro Neto’s pass before firing past Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs. However, the early dominance faded as the visitors grew in confidence and began to push forward. Sunderland equalised midway through the first half when Nordi Mukiele’s long throw caused confusion in Chelsea’s defence, allowing Wilson Isidor to poke home the leveller.

Maresca expressed disappointment with his team’s inability to control the game after their early advantage. “We didn’t create a lot. We struggled. We need our players to perform one hundred per cent. Even at 1-0 we lost duels, we lost second balls. Against this kind of team, you need to win those,” he lamented. His comments highlighted concerns over the team’s lack of aggression and focus throughout the encounter.

The visitors completed their remarkable comeback in stoppage time when substitute Chemsdine Talbi struck the winner to stun the home crowd. Chelsea’s defence, which had been under increasing pressure in the closing minutes, failed to clear their lines, allowing Talbi to secure all three points for Sunderland and extend their impressive early-season form.

Maresca concluded by urging his players to show greater determination and mental strength in upcoming fixtures. “When you are not able to win, it’s important that you don’t lose,” he warned. The Chelsea boss emphasised that his squad must quickly find stability if they are to compete effectively in the Premier League, as dropped points in games like this could prove costly later in the campaign.
