Hummels Leaves Dortmund as Sahin Succeeds Terzic.
Defender Mats Hummels will depart Borussia Dortmund after 13 years and 508 appearances across two spells, marking the end of an illustrious career at the club. The 35-year-old, who recently reached the Champions League final with Dortmund, where they were defeated by Real Madrid, will leave a significant legacy.
Hummels’ exit coincides with the appointment of Nuri Sahin as Dortmund’s new manager. Sahin replaces Edin Terzic, who departed on Thursday after requesting to terminate his contract.
Reflecting on his time at the club, Hummels told the club’s website: “It was a huge honour and joy for me to have played for BVB for so long and to have been part of the journey from 13th place in January 2008 to what Borussia Dortmund represents today. This club and its fans are something very special – and for me even more than that.”
Hummels initially joined Dortmund from Bayern Munich on loan in 2008 before signing permanently the following year. During his tenure, he secured two successive Bundesliga titles and the German Cup. In 2016, he rejoined Bayern Munich, where he added another German Cup to his achievements before returning to Dortmund in 2019.
Hummels’ departure marks the end of an era for Borussia Dortmund, while the club looks forward to a new chapter under the management of Nuri Sahin.
