Melania Trump has issued a plea for national unity following the assassination attempt on her husband, former President Donald Trump.
The incident occurred during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, resulting in one spectator’s death and two others critically injured.
In a statement shared on X on Sunday, the former first lady expressed her gratitude towards the Secret Service agents and law enforcement officials who protected her husband during the chaotic scene.
“When I watched that violent bullet strike my husband, Donald, I realized my life, and Barron’s life, were on the brink of devastating change,” Melania wrote. “I am grateful to the brave Secret Service agents and law enforcement officials who risked their own lives to protect my husband.”
Melania Trump went on to call for Americans to come together in the wake of the shooting. “America, the fabric of our gentle nation is tattered, but our courage and common sense must ascend and bring us back together as one,” she urged.
The attack unfolded just after 6 PM when the shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, opened fire from a nearby rooftop.
Donald Trump was delivering his speech when shots rang out. He ducked behind his podium as Secret Service agents rushed to his aid, helping him offstage and into a secure motorcade. Trump later revealed that a bullet had grazed his ear, attributing his survival to divine intervention.
Expressing sympathy for the families of the victims, Melania said, “To the families of the innocent victims who are now suffering from this heinous act, I humbly offer my sincerest sympathy.”
Despite speculation about her absence from the campaign trail and rumors of marital discord, Melania has remained largely out of the public eye.
Her recent activities included hosting a fundraiser for Log Cabin Republicans in Manhattan last month. Her emotional statement comes amidst these personal challenges, emphasizing the importance of unity and support beyond political divisions.
“For those of you who cry in support, I thank you,” she said, commending those who have reached out across the political divide. “Thank you for remembering that every single politician is a man or a woman with a loving family.”
The incident has cast a shadow over Trump’s campaign as he aims to reclaim the White House in November. The former president has acknowledged the difficulty of the situation for his family, particularly for Melania, who did not attend his criminal hush money trial in May.
