The Defence Headquarters has announced that it is investigating a claim by Kebbi State Governor Mohammed Nasir Idris that troops withdrew from Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, before 25 students were abducted.
The review aims to determine the circumstances surrounding troop deployment and movement at the time of the attack.
Major General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, said the military is fully involved in operations to rescue the kidnapped students and bring those responsible to justice. He emphasized that the Armed Forces remain committed to the safety of the students and the affected communities.
Governor Idris had expressed concern after reporting that the Department of State Services had issued intelligence warning of a possible attack. He questioned why security personnel reportedly left the school shortly before the incident, highlighting a serious gap in protection.
The DHQ stated that troop movements are based on intelligence assessments and the overall security situation. It confirmed that any gaps identified during the review will be addressed with corrective measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Military units continue to work with state authorities, community leaders, and other security agencies to strengthen protection around schools and vulnerable communities. Rescue operations remain a top priority as troops pursue actionable intelligence to ensure the safe return of the abducted students.
