On the occasion of World Radio Day 2024, Nigeria joins the global community in celebrating radio’s lasting influence as a mainstay of communication, entertainment, and education.
The theme for this year’s celebration titled, ‘Radio: A century informing, entertaining and educating,’ “reflects the remarkable achievement of radio as a means of communication and information for over 100 years, despite the advent of social media,”Mohammed Idris stated.
Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated the importance of radio in Nigerian society since its inception in 1933. Recognizing radio’s unparalleled reach, the government has emphasized its role in disseminating information, promoting cultural unity, and providing a platform for diverse voices to be heard.
With only 89 licensed community radio stations currently operating in Nigeria, the government aims to bolster the sector by initiating reforms to facilitate the establishment of more stations. Emphasizing the importance of community radio in strengthening democracy and social cohesion, the government calls on sub-national governments, wealthy individuals, and stakeholders to invest in expanding access to credible information, particularly in rural areas.
Collaborating with UNESCO, Nigeria seeks to drive reforms and enhance the capacity of the radio sector to ensure the dissemination of reliable information to the populace. In line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, the government emphasizes the need for responsible broadcasting, urging radio stations to uphold editorial standards of fact-checking, objectivity, and balance.
