The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have been urged by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Rt. Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, to end their seven-day warning strike that began on Monday.
In a statement issued by Olajide Oshundun, the Director of Press and Public Relations, Hon. Onyejeocha expressed disappointment at the unions’ decision, the Minister stated their disregard for the Federal Government’s proactive measures aimed at addressing their concerns. According to her, the Ministry had not been officially notified of the strike as required by the Trade Dispute Act, Section 18.
Efforts for dialogue were made by the Ministry upon learning of the impending strike. Despite attempts to arrange an emergency meeting, physical interaction couldn’t be facilitated due to constraints. However, a tele-discussion ensued between union leaders and Ministry representatives.
Appealing for a retraction from their hard-line stance, the Minister urged SSANU and NASU to engage in constructive dialogue with the federal government.She reiterated her stance that strikes should only be a last resort after exhausting all avenues for conciliation.
