MultiChoice Nigeria Slashes DStv Decoder Price By 50% And Offers Free Subscription Upgrades

MultiChoice Nigeria Slashes DStv Decoder Price By 50% And Offers Free Subscription Upgrades.

In a move to make premium entertainment more accessible to Nigerians, MultiChoice Nigeria, the leading Pay-TV provider, has announced a significant 50% reduction in the price of its DStv decoder, dropping from ₦20,000 to ₦10,000. Alongside this, the company has introduced a promotional offer titled “We Got You,” providing free subscription upgrades to customers, as it seeks to reverse recent subscriber declines amidst economic challenges.

The price slash and promotional campaign, effective from 16 June to 31 July 2025, come as MultiChoice acknowledges a loss of 1.4 million subscribers between March 2023 and March 2025, largely attributed to Nigeria’s economic hardships. John Ugbe, CEO of MultiChoice Nigeria, emphasised that the initiative is designed to support customers during tough times. “We understand the economic pressure many Nigerians are under, and this campaign is about giving back,” Ugbe stated. “We want to ensure our customers feel appreciated and have access to the best entertainment every day.”

Under the “We Got You” promotion, customers who pay their current DStv subscription in full during the promotional period will be automatically upgraded to the next higher package tier at no additional cost. This means access to more channels, including premium movies, sports, children’s programming, drama, and news, offering greater value to both active and returning subscribers. “This is about making premium content more accessible and showing that DStv offers something for everyone, not just football fans,” Ugbe added.

The company’s efforts are part of a broader strategy to reposition DStv as a platform for daily value, encouraging content discovery across diverse genres. MultiChoice faces stiff competition from global streaming giants like Netflix and YouTube, as well as challenges from piracy and currency depreciation, which have impacted its operations. The decoder price cut is seen as a strategic move to lower the entry barrier for new customers, while the subscription upgrade aims to retain and re-engage existing ones.

The announcement has sparked positive reactions across Nigeria, with many praising MultiChoice for its customer-focused approach. “This is a welcome development,” said Tunde Adebayo, a Lagos-based DStv subscriber. “The price reduction makes it easier for more families to enjoy quality entertainment, and the free upgrade is a fantastic bonus.”

MultiChoice’s latest initiative follows a series of price adjustments in recent years, including subscription fee increases in April and November 2023, and May 2024, driven by inflation, fuel scarcity, and a weakening naira. Despite these challenges, the company remains committed to delivering world-class entertainment to Nigerian households.
