The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), has confirmed that one of its Alpha-Jet aircraft was involved in an in-flight emergency on 6 December 2025 near Kainji Air Force Base, Niger State. The incident prompted the safe ejection of both pilots, who are now undergoing routine medical evaluation.

Pilots’ Bravery Prevents Casualties

The Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, confirmed the incident which was reported by Fishe NG, in a statement on Saturday, explaining that the aircraft developed an emergency shortly after take-off. He revealed that the pilots expertly manoeuvred the jet away from populated areas before ejecting safely.

“NAF commends the exceptional bravery and professionalism of its Alpha Jet pilots who safely ejected following an in-flight emergency during a post-inspection functional check flight today, 6 December 2025, at Nigerian Air Force Base Kainji,” Ejodame stated.

He further noted, “Shortly after take-off, the aircraft developed an emergency, prompting the pilots to act swiftly and with remarkable composure. They expertly manoeuvred the aircraft away from populated areas before executing a safe ejection. The crew is currently undergoing routine medical evaluation.”

Leadership Praises Professionalism

Ejodame added that Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, has praised the pilots for their courage, discipline, and sound judgment, which prevented loss of life. The Air Chief has also directed the immediate constitution of a Board of Inquiry to investigate the incident thoroughly.

“The Nigerian Air Force reassures the public of its unwavering commitment to stringent safety standards and operational excellence. The NAF remains dedicated to safeguarding its personnel while protecting the lives and property of citizens in line with its constitutional mandate,” the statement read.

NAF’s Track Record and Community Impact

This latest incident follows past crashes in Niger State, including the August 2023 MI-171 helicopter crash on a casualty-evacuation mission in Shiroro LGA. That crash led to temporary displacement of villagers, who fled their homes in fear of further accidents. NAF’s public response to previous incidents emphasized professionalism, accountability, and a rejection of misleading propaganda circulating on social media.

According to the then-spokesman, Edward Gabkwet, fatalities and mishaps are sometimes inevitable in high-risk operations, but the force remains committed to investigating causes and maintaining operational discipline. The Chief of the Air Staff at the time stressed the importance of support and transparency to affected families.

Balancing Risk, Transparency, and Safety

NAF’s leadership acknowledges the inherent risks of operating in regions with intensified air operations. The Air Force has pledged to maintain strict safety protocols, enhance maintenance procedures, and conduct thorough risk assessments to reduce accidents.

For local communities, these incidents underscore the need for clear communication, safety assurances, and support systems. While NAF prioritizes operational objectives, minimizing civilian exposure to risk remains critical to sustaining public trust.

Looking Ahead

The outcome of the Board of Inquiry into the 2025 Alpha-Jet incident will be closely watched. The Nigerian Air Force has reassured the public that lessons learned from each incident will strengthen safety practices, improve training, and ensure that operational excellence continues alongside protection for civilians.

The swift actions of the pilots on 6 December 2025 serve as a reminder of the professionalism and courage embedded in NAF’s personnel, even in high-pressure situations.

For the people of Niger State and across Nigeria, the hope is that such incidents remain rare and are met with prompt, transparent responses that safeguard both lives and property.
