NAFDAC Issues Urgent Warning: Dove Deodorant And Soap Pose Risks To Reproductive Health

NAFDAC Issues Urgent Warning: Dove Deodorant And Soap Pose Risks To Reproductive Health.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a critical alert to the public, cautioning against the use of certain Dove-branded deodorant and soap products due to potential health risks. The regulatory body highlighted that these products contain a banned chemical substance that could harm the reproductive system, affect unborn children, and cause skin sensitisation.

In a statement released on 6 June 2025, NAFDAC identified four variants of Dove hand soap and deodorants containing 2-(4-tert-butylbenzyl) propionaldehyde, commonly known as BMHCA. This chemical has been prohibited in cosmetic products by European Union authorities due to its potential to impair reproductive health, pose risks to the health of unborn children, and trigger skin irritation or sensitisation.

The alert follows a ban by the EU’s Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (RAPEX) in Brussels, which flagged Dove Exfoliating Hand Soap (100g) and several Dove deodorant products for non-compliance with the Cosmetic Products Regulation. NAFDAC’s Public Alert No. 018/2025 underscored the urgency of the situation, warning Nigerians to avoid using these products to safeguard their health.

“Consumers are urged to exercise caution and vigilance,” NAFDAC stated. “Anyone in possession of the affected Dove products should immediately cease use or sale and submit any remaining stock to the nearest NAFDAC office.” The agency also encouraged healthcare professionals and consumers to report any adverse reactions linked to these products via its e-reporting platforms, including the website (www.nafdac.gov.ng) (www.nafdac.gov.ng) and the Med-safety app, available for download on Android and iOS devices.

This development has sparked concern among users of Dove products in Nigeria, with NAFDAC reiterating its commitment to protecting public health by closely monitoring and regulating cosmetic products in the market. The agency’s swift action aligns with its mandate to ensure the safety and well-being of Nigerians.

As the news spreads, consumers are advised to check the packaging of their Dove hand soap and deodorant products and remain vigilant to avoid potential health risks. Further updates are expected as NAFDAC continues to collaborate with international regulatory bodies to address this issue.
