Napoli Extend Lead At Serie A Summit With Verona Victory

As Inter Milan Keep Up With Pace In Title Race

Napoli Extend Lead At Serie A Summit With Verona Victory.

Napoli have solidified their position at the top of Serie A, now four points clear of second-placed Inter Milan, following a convincing 2-0 victory over Hellas Verona at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

The reigning champions wasted no time in asserting their dominance, taking the lead in just the fifth minute. The score came about when a shot from Giovanni di Lorenzo struck the post, fortuitously rebounding off Verona’s goalkeeper Lorenzo Montipo and into the net.

The hosts sealed the match in the 61st minute when Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, who once plied his trade at Fulham, unleashed a powerful, unstoppable shot to ensure Napoli’s fifth consecutive league win. Despite chances from former Manchester United players Romelu Lukaku and Scott McTominay, Antonio Conte’s team maintained a comfortable lead throughout the match.

Conte, who has previously hoisted the Serie A trophy with Juventus on three occasions and with Inter in 2021, could achieve a unique feat by winning the championship with a third different club if Napoli secures the title this season. However, the match was without the services of star forward Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who was absent after expressing his desire to leave the club. The 23-year-old Georgian has been heavily linked with moves to Paris-Saint Germain, Liverpool, and Chelsea, with expectations high that he will depart in the January transfer window. Bournemouth’s Philip Billing was also not involved, having joined on loan just the day before.

Darmian’s Winner Keeps Inter in the Title Race

In other Serie A action, Inter Milan kept their title aspirations alive with a narrow 1-0 win over Venezia. Matteo Darmian, known to Premier League fans from his time at Manchester United, scored the decisive goal, capitalizing on a rebound to secure all three points for Simone Inzaghi’s team. This victory came on the heels of their defeat to AC Milan in the Italian Super Cup final, showcasing resilience despite the absence of key players Hakan Calhanoglu, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Yann Bisseck due to injury.

Inzaghi praised his squad’s effort, commenting, “It was not simple, but we won and that is what we wanted. It wasn’t easy for us, after losing the final in that way. The boys were great, we came here tired and we played a great game.”

Elsewhere, Atalanta couldn’t capitalize on their home advantage as they were held to a goalless draw by Udinese, keeping them in third place but unable to close the gap on the leading duo.

This weekend’s results in Italy’s top flight have set the stage for an enthralling battle for the Serie A crown, with Napoli looking to extend their lead further while Inter aims to keep the pressure on.
