National Grid Collapse Plunges Nigeria Into Darkness Once More.
Nigeria has experienced another nationwide blackout following the collapse of the national grid on Wednesday. This marks the twelfth such incident in 2024, raising fresh concerns over the country’s electricity infrastructure.
The Independent System Operator (ISO), an arm of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), confirmed that all power generation plants connected to the grid had ceased production by 2pm. Just an hour earlier, these plants had collectively supplied an average of 3,087 megawatts of electricity.
A post on the official account of Nigeria’s national grid on X disclosed that the collapse occurred at approximately 2:06 pm. The message read, “The major grid setback has occurred, and the restoration is to commence.”
The Jos Electricity Distribution Company (Jos Disco) also confirmed the development, attributing the power outage across its franchise states to the grid failure. In a statement, the company explained, “The loss of power supply from the national grid occurred this afternoon at about 1333 hours. We hope to restore normal power supply to our esteemed customers as soon as the grid supply is restored back to normalcy. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we strive to serve you better.”
This latest incident follows multiple grid collapses in October, despite assurances from the Federal Government of a permanent solution to the recurring problem.
The issue continues to spark frustration among Nigerians, who rely heavily on the national grid for electricity. Calls for sustainable solutions and a robust power infrastructure remain at the forefront of national discourse.
