National Grid Collapses For 10th Time In 2024, Plunging Nigeria Into Darkness.
In yet another setback for Nigeria’s power sector, the National Grid experienced a significant collapse on Tuesday, 5th November, marking the 10th such incident in 2024. The outage, which reportedly began around 2:09 pm, left many parts of the country in darkness, as power was disrupted across multiple regions.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) responded to the situation with a statement from its General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, who provided further insights into the cause of the disruption. According to Mrs Mbah, the collapse, recorded at 1:52 pm, was attributed to a “line tripping” event, which disrupted bulk power supply in the affected areas. However, she noted that not all sections of the grid were impacted, as some areas continued to receive power.
Mrs Mbah assured Nigerians that TCN engineers had already commenced restoration efforts, working swiftly to bring back power in stages across the impacted regions. She apologised for the inconvenience caused by the outage and reiterated TCN’s commitment to achieving full restoration as soon as possible.
The incident underscores ongoing challenges facing Nigeria’s power infrastructure, with grid instability becoming an all-too-frequent issue. This latest collapse follows a series of similar events this year, the first of which was recorded on 4th February.
