NDLEA Destroys Record 1.6 Million Kilogrammes Of Illicit Drugs In Landmark Operation.

In a significant stride against drug trafficking, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has destroyed approximately 1.6 million kilogrammes of assorted illicit substances in what has become the largest single drug destruction exercise in the agency’s history.

The incineration took place on Saturday, 12 April 2025, at an isolated location in Ipara, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State. The drugs, seized from operations across Lagos, Ogun, and Oyo states, were set ablaze in the presence of dignitaries including government officials, traditional rulers, members of the clergy, representatives of security agencies, international partners, NGOs, and community leaders.

Among the destroyed substances were 123 kilogrammes of cocaine, 46.8 kilogrammes of heroin, 1.4 million kilogrammes of cannabis, 148,000 kilogrammes of codeine syrup, 3,244.26 kilogrammes of tramadol, 1,544 kilogrammes of *skuchies* (a dangerous mixture of drugs), and 111 kilogrammes of methamphetamine, among others.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa (Rtd), described the exercise as a firm demonstration of the agency’s resolve to rid the country of illicit drugs.

“This operation is a testament to the NDLEA’s steadfast commitment to tackling the scourge of drug trafficking in our society,” he said. “The sheer volume of seizures, which totals approximately 1.6 million kilogrammes, serves as a reminder of the grave danger these substances pose to public health until they are completely and irreversibly destroyed.”

He further emphasised that the agency remains unwavering in its mission to protect Nigerians from the devastating consequences of drug abuse and trafficking, calling on all stakeholders to continue supporting the fight.

The landmark event underscores the NDLEA’s continued efforts to enforce drug laws and dismantle criminal networks, as well as its dedication to safeguarding communities from the harmful effects of narcotics.
