Finidi George Set to become Super Eagles new Head Coach on a permanent basis.
The Nigeria Football Federation Board has given the green light to former star winger Finidi George to lead the Senior Men’s National Football Team, the Super Eagles, as Head Coach. This decision follows the recommendation of the Technical and Development Committee.
George, who previously served as assistant to José Santos Peseiro for 20 months, assumed the role in an interim capacity during recent friendly matches in Morocco. In the first match, his squad secured a historic 2-1 victory over Ghana, breaking an 18-year winless streak against the Black Stars. However, they faced a setback in the second game, losing 0-2 to Mali.
A prominent figure in Nigeria’s football history, George was part of the renowned ‘Golden Generation’ that clinched the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations title and impressed at the FIFA World Cup in the same year.
He boasts 62 caps for Nigeria, including appearances at the 1994 and 1998 World Cup tournaments, and has medals from various AFCON tournaments.
The 52-year-old, known for his time with Ajax Amsterdam and Real Betis, also played domestically for Calabar Rovers and Sharks FC before heading to Europe. His notable contributions to Nigerian football include assisting Rashidi Yekini in scoring Nigeria’s first-ever World Cup goal in 1994.
Now tasked with leading the Super Eagles, George’s immediate focus is on securing victories in the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa and Benin Republic.
These crucial encounters in Uyo and Abidjan are vital for Nigeria, currently placed third in Group C of the African campaign behind Rwanda and South Africa.
