SAFA Criticized for Abandoning Super Falcons After Olympic Qualification
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has expressed disappointment with the South African Football Association (SAFA) for allegedly abandoning the Super Falcons immediately after their Olympic qualification.
According to Ruth David, the NFF’s Director of Competitions, SAFA officials reportedly distanced themselves from the Nigerian team following the final whistle of the crucial match against South Africa.
The game’s outcome confirmed Nigeria’s spot in Group C of this year’s Olympic Tournament, alongside Brazil, Spain, and Japan.
David stated that SAFA authorities informed the Nigerian delegation that they were on their own after the match’s conclusion. They allegedly refused to provide transportation beyond returning the team to their hotel and ceased to assign security personnel to the delegation.
However, David commended Mr. Alexander Tope Ajayi, the Charge d’Affaires at the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, for his support.
Mr. Ajayi ensured the team’s comfort throughout their stay, organized a dinner for them, mobilized transport for Nigerian residents in Pretoria to attend the game and support the team, and arranged transportation to the airport for the team’s departure.
This incident highlights the importance of diplomatic and organizational support for national teams during international competitions, emphasizing the crucial role played by officials like Ajayi in ensuring a smooth and positive experience for athletes.
