NFF President Backs Finidi George’s Appointment as Super Eagles Head Coach

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF)  appointed Finidi George as the head coach of the Super Eagles, with a clear mandate to lead the team to the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

Addressing the media on Soccer Africa, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau revealed that the decision to appoint Finidi was influenced by widespread calls from Nigerians for an indigenous coach to helm the national team. “We listened to the call of Nigeria saying they want an indigenous coach for the Super Eagles. I am very happy when we unveiled Finidi to Nigeria,” Gusau stated.

The appointment follows the conclusion of the contract with former coach Jose Peseiro. During the interim period, Finidi was tasked with leading the team in friendlies during the FIFA window. His performance in this role evidently impressed the NFF, leading to his full-time appointment.

Gusau emphasized that the selection process was thorough and deliberate. “The NFF Technical Director put all the names on the list, and they chose the best they feel will work,” he explained. Finidi’s coaching team, composed of assistants chosen by him, including former Super Eagles player Daniel Amokachi and they are expected to provide robust support as they work towards their ambitious goals.

Finidi George, a former Nigerian international and celebrated player, brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of Nigerian football to his new role. His targets are clear: to guide the Super Eagles to a strong showing at the upcoming AFCON and to ensure Nigeria’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The NFF’s confidence in Finidi’s abilities and the unified support from the Nigerian football community mark a new chapter for the Super Eagles. Fans and stakeholders alike are optimistic that this appointment will rejuvenate the team and lead to success on the continental and global stages.
