Famous U.S. rapper Nicki Minaj has called on fans to show more support and patience for Nigerian artists.
She noted that several Nigerian musicians have faced harsh criticism recently, with some accusing Burna Boy of arrogance after he joked about wanting “only rich fans,” while Yemi Alade was criticized for rejecting the idea of U.S. intervention in Nigeria’s security crisis.
Nicki urged people to approach Nigerian artists with wisdom and compassion, rather than rushing to judge them. She wrote on her X handle, “There are very logical reasons for most things when we look not to judge, but to comprehend. Let’s lift them up & continue to use wisdom.”
Her plea comes amid mounting pressure on Nigerian celebrities, who have been scrutinized for their comments and actions. Some fans feel these artists are being insensitive to the country’s real challenges, especially amid deadly attacks and kidnappings in regions like Kwara and Kebbi.
Minaj’s comments reflect her belief that critics often miss important context. She argued that many controversies could be better understood if people stopped judging immediately and tried to see things from the artists’ perspectives.
In addition to defending artists, Nicki has also used her platform to speak about religious violence in Nigeria. At a recent United Nations event, she called for urgent action to protect Christians, saying faith is “under attack” and emphasizing the importance of freedom of worship.
She emphasized that her call is not about taking sides: “Protecting Christians in Nigeria is not about taking sides or dividing people. It is about uniting humanity,” she said. She ended her remarks by addressing her fan base, the “Barbz,” saying: “This isn’t about taking sides. This is about standing up in the face of injustice. For the rest of my life, I will care if anyone, anywhere, is being persecuted for their beliefs.”
