Niger Coup Leader Rejects ECOWAS Return, Detains President Bazoum

General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the leader of the military coup in Niger Republic, has declared that the country will not release President Bazoum and adamantly rejects the prospect of rejoining the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Tchiani’s statement comes amidst escalating tensions following the decision of Niger Republic, alongside Mali and Burkina Faso, to withdraw from ECOWAS, citing grievances over the bloc’s policies and actions. The trio announced their withdrawal in a joint communiqué on January 28, 2024, sparking concerns about the stability and cooperation within the West African region.

Speaking to RTN news, General Tchiani reiterated the sovereign stance of the Sahel countries, emphasizing their resolve to stand by their decision to exit ECOWAS. “Just because we are members of the bloc, food and medicine supply was cut off. Power was also cut off and our own funds have been frozen,” Tchiani stated, highlighting the economic strain faced by the withdrawing nations.

Despite calls from ECOWAS for reconsideration and warnings of potential repercussions, Tchiani remained resolute. “We would never release Bazoum,” he declared firmly. “Setting Bazoum free is akin to stabbing ourselves in the stomach which would do harm to Nigeriens.”

The refusal to release President Bazoum, who was democratically elected, further complicates the political landscape in Niger Republic. Bazoum’s detention has drawn international condemnation, with calls for his immediate release and a return to constitutional order.

Meanwhile, the ECOWAS Commission, led by President Omar Alieu Touray, expressed deep concern over the withdrawal of the three member states and its implications for regional peace and stability. During an Extra-ordinary Session of the Mediation and Security Council held in Abuja, Touray emphasized the importance of unity within ECOWAS, stressing that the region must overcome challenges together.
