Nigeria and Tanzania have taken steps to strengthen their economic ties and cooperation, with Vice President Kashim Shettima emphasizing the importance of enhanced collaboration between the two nations.
Speaking at the Presidential Villa in Abuja during a meeting with former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, Shettima highlighted the historic relationship between Nigeria and Tanzania, particularly their shared roles in the fight against apartheid and colonialism.
The Vice President praised Tanzania’s leadership legacy and described the country as a beacon of hope and stability in East Africa.
He stated the importance of fostering stronger economic and social ties between Nigeria and Tanzania, especially within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
“With the discovery of significant gas reserves, Tanzania is on a fast track to development. If key African nations like Nigeria and Tanzania succeed, the entire continent will benefit,” Shettima stated.
He also acknowledged the Tanzanian government’s support for Nigerian businesses operating in the country, including United Bank for Africa, Guarantee Trust Bank, and Dangote Group.
Former President Kikwete, who was in Nigeria for the convocation ceremony at the National Defence College, expressed Tanzania’s commitment to strengthening business and diplomatic ties with Nigeria.
He acknowledged the role of Nigeria in training Tanzanian military personnel and expressed optimism for deeper collaboration in defense, trade, and diplomacy.
Both leaders stressed the need to revisit outdated agreements and scale up bilateral relations in the spirit of African solidarity.
The meeting also had in attendance the Acting Tanzanian High Commissioner in Nigeria, Mrs. Judica Nagunwa, and other high-ranking officials.
