Abuja, Nigeria – December 12, 2025 — The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), has announced that its Passport Digital Platform will undergo routine system maintenance, a move expected to cause temporary service disruptions for users across the country and in the diaspora.

In a statement released on Friday, the NIS Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, explained that the maintenance exercise is part of efforts to enhance system performance and improve user experience on the digital passport platform.

According to the statement, the maintenance window will run from:

  • 12:00 a.m. on December 12, 2025, to

  • 6:00 a.m. on December 14, 2025 (GMT).

Temporary Disruption Expected

During this 48-hour period, users seeking to access passport services online may encounter:

  • Temporary service interruptions

  • Slow response times

  • Limited access to selected passport services

Akinlabi emphasized that these disruptions are expected and are a necessary part of ongoing efforts to maintain a secure and efficient digital passport ecosystem.

“The Nigeria Immigration Service wishes to inform the general public that it is carrying out routine maintenance on its Passport Digital Platform to enhance system performance and overall user experience.

During this period, users will experience temporary service interruptions, slow response times, or limited access to selected NIS Passport Services,” the statement read.

NIS Calls for Public Patience

The Service urged citizens to remain patient and understanding while the technical teams work to restore full functionality. It stressed that the exercise is essential for strengthening the system, improving reliability, and ensuring better service delivery.

The Passport Digital Platform plays a crucial role in Nigeria’s modernised passport application process, enabling users to apply, renew, and track passport applications online. Regular maintenance, according to the NIS, helps safeguard the platform against system glitches and ensures it can withstand high user traffic.

Guidance for Applicants

NIS encouraged applicants to plan ahead, especially those with urgent travel plans, and to monitor official communication channels for updates. Support remains available via the Service’s official social media accounts and email channels during the maintenance window.
