Nigeria Misses Out On Inaugural FUTSAL World Rankings

Nigeria Aims for Futsal Revival as FIFA Introduces Inaugural Rankings

In a recent development by FIFA, the inaugural Futsal Men’s and Women’s World Rankings have been unveiled, shedding light on the global landscape of indoor soccer.

However, Nigeria’s absence from the rankings highlights the country’s inactivity in futsal, the indoor variant of football.

The FIFA Futsal Men’s World Cup is set to celebrate its 10th edition this year in Uzbekistan. Despite this longstanding tournament history, Nigeria’s participation has been limited, with the country only competing once back in 1992 in Hong Kong. In that tournament, the Nigerian team struggled in Group A, which included formidable opponents like Argentina, Poland, and Hong Kong, ultimately finishing at the bottom of the group after losing all three matches.

In contrast to Nigeria’s futsal journey, Morocco emerges as Africa’s top-ranked nation and stands at an impressive sixth place globally.

Morocco’s rise in futsal rankings is attributed to their recent triumph in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Futsal tournament. They clinched victory by defeating Angola 5-1 in a thrilling final match.

The top-ranked countries in FIFA’s inaugural Futsal World Rankings include traditional powerhouses like Brazil, Portugal, Spain, Iran, and Argentina, showcasing the global dominance of these nations in indoor soccer.

For Nigeria, this absence from the rankings serves as a reminder of the potential and opportunities awaiting in futsal. With the right focus, investment, and participation in international competitions, Nigeria aims to revive its futsal program and make significant strides on the global stage in the future.
