Nigeria Pledges Reciprocal Visa Measures As US Tightens Rules For Applicants

Nigeria Pledges Reciprocal Visa Measures As US Tightens Rules For Applicants.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to introduce reciprocal visa requirements for American citizens in response to new, stricter US visa policies targeting Nigerians. The US government now mandates that Nigerian visa applicants disclose their social media profiles and activities from the past five years, with failure to comply potentially leading to visa denial or future entry bans, according to a statement from the US Mission in Nigeria.

The new US regulation, an expansion of rules previously applied to international student visa applicants, requires Nigerians to list all social media usernames, handles, email addresses, and phone numbers used on platforms over the last five years on the DS-160 visa application form. The US Mission explained that the measure, part of the Trump administration’s efforts to bolster national security, aims to enhance vetting processes for visa applicants.

In a swift reaction, Nigeria’s Federal Government vowed to mirror these requirements for US citizens applying for Nigerian visas. “Anything visa is reciprocal,” a government official stated, as reported by Vanguard. “What you are mandating our nationals to do, we will also mandate your citizens applying for our visa to do.” This stance reflects Nigeria’s commitment to maintaining fairness in diplomatic relations, with the government planning to convene an inter-agency meeting to finalise its response.

The tightened US visa rules come amid ongoing adjustments to immigration policies, including a reduction of non-immigrant, non-diplomatic visas for Nigerians to single-entry, three-month validity periods, as announced by the US Department of State in July 2025. The policy shift has sparked debate, with some Nigerian analysts, as noted on X, arguing that the measures unfairly target Nigerians while ignoring the broader context of global visa reciprocity.

This development follows a history of visa-related tensions between Nigeria and the US, including disputes over travel advisories and reciprocal visa policies. The Federal Government’s pledge to retaliate underscores its resolve to protect Nigerian citizens’ interests while navigating complex diplomatic relations. As both nations refine their visa frameworks, the outcome of Nigeria’s reciprocal measures remains a focal point for travellers and policymakers alike.
