Nigeria Strengthens Global Influence And Vows To Protect Citizens Abroad.

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that no Nigerian faces humiliation abroad, as part of its broader diplomatic efforts to enhance national pride and global engagement.

This assurance was given by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing in Abuja. Addressing the theme “From Passive to Active Global Engagement Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Leadership,” Tuggar outlined key initiatives aimed at repositioning Nigeria on the world stage, strengthening international partnerships, and boosting confidence in the Nigerian passport.

Economic and Diplomatic Advancements

The Minister highlighted Nigeria’s strengthened diplomatic ties, including newly established relations with Bahrain and a $2.5 billion collaboration with Brazil on fertiliser production, hybrid seed development, and agricultural financing. He also noted efforts to expand educational and trade opportunities with Canada, particularly through partnerships with Carleton University and the Sprott School of Business.

Nigeria has also deepened its relationship with China, with commitments towards security cooperation, economic growth, and removing trade tariffs. Agreements have been reached for peanut exports and financing key railway projects.

Additionally, Nigeria has signed bilateral agreements with Equatorial Guinea for the construction of the Gulf of Guinea Gas Pipeline Project and secured $4 billion in investments through the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI). Relations with Egypt have also been elevated, including a partnership with EgyptAir to upgrade its fleet.

Tuggar further announced significant agreements with European nations. Nigeria has secured a €600 million Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with France to support digital and creative industries, a $2 billion investment deal with Germany for the Nigeria-Siemens Power Project, and a €250 million investment from the Netherlands to boost businesses in Nigeria.

In Asia, Nigeria has obtained $14 billion in investment commitments from Indian investors and signed agreements with Kuwait to strengthen bilateral ties. Qatar has also facilitated trade growth through the establishment of a Joint Business Council, with seven MOUs signed to enhance cooperation, particularly in education.

Security and Humanitarian Efforts

To enhance national and regional security, Russia has pledged military support, including equipment and training for Nigerian forces, alongside a $500 million gas field licensing agreement. Saudi Arabia has also signed two MOUs with Nigeria to advance economic ties, including a pact to integrate into the $7.7 trillion Halal Economy.

Meanwhile, the United States has played a role in strengthening Nigeria’s financial recovery, facilitating the repatriation of $52.8 million and reinforcing the US-Nigeria Air Transport Agreement.

The government has also prioritised citizen welfare abroad, successfully securing the release of detained Nigerians, evacuating African students from Ukraine, and supporting Palestinian children affected by conflict. Additionally, efforts to preserve Nigeria’s cultural heritage have led to the return of the Benin Bronzes.

Further demonstrating its commitment to international cooperation, Nigeria has deployed 213 Technical Aid Corps (TAC) volunteers to African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) countries. Consular support has also improved with the launch of the Nigerians in Diaspora Database, now boasting over 11,000 registrations to enhance engagement with the global Nigerian community.

Commitment to Press Freedom

At the start of the briefing, the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, reiterated the government’s dedication to press freedom and fostering a conducive environment for media practice in Nigeria.

“This administration believes that a free and responsible press is essential for good governance, transparency, and national development,” Idris stated.

He also emphasised President Tinubu’s commitment to upholding constitutional rights, encouraging constructive criticism, and supporting a strong democratic framework.

With these diplomatic strides and policy reforms, Nigeria is reinforcing its global presence, ensuring the protection of its citizens abroad, and fostering stronger international partnerships for economic and social development.
