The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has announced the approval of a comprehensive Group Personal Accident Insurance Policy. This decision, greenlit by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, marks a notable departure from the existing Group Life Assurance Policy administered by the Ministry of Defence.
While the Ministry’s policy primarily addresses the families of military personnel killed in action, the newly approved insurance policy focuses on providing coverage for medical expenses resulting from accidents during military operations. According to Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, the Director of Public Relations and Information for the Nigerian Air Force, the initiative aligns with Air Marshal Abubakar’s commitment to fostering a highly motivated force through improved welfare and infrastructure.
Unlike previous insurance policies, the Group Personal Accident Insurance Policy (GPAIP) specifically caters to the unique hazards and challenges faced by NAF personnel throughout their careers. Gabkwet emphasized that this move was imperative to ensure the well-being of personnel, given the diverse hazards encountered during military operations.
Under the GPAIP, personnel will now have the assurance of adequate care in the event of disability, death, or any accident during military operations. The insurance coverage, facilitated through a contract with KBC Insurance Brokers Limited, encompasses compensation for bodily injuries, death, disablement, and the payment of medical expenses directly resulting from accidents, external violence, or visible means.
“The execution of military operations exposes personnel to diverse levels of hazards with life-altering consequences of fatalities, hence, the need to continuously review existing policies to cater for personnel well-being,” stated Gabkwet.
The comprehensive nature of the GPAIP extends beyond the individual personnel to also cover the families of those who lose their lives during operations. Additionally, the policy includes provisions for salary reimbursement to the NAF in the event of hospitalization, ensuring a holistic approach to the welfare of the military personnel.
