Nigeria’s football community is mourning the passing of former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Fregene, who died on Sunday, 13 October 2024, after a prolonged illness. Fregene, fondly nicknamed “Apo,” was renowned for his remarkable agility and consistency between the posts during the 1960s and 1970s. He was part of Nigeria’s squad at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico, where his standout performances earned him widespread recognition.
The 77-year-old passed away surrounded by his family. His former teammate, Segun Odegbami, confirmed the news, paying tribute to Fregene’s legacy both as a goalkeeper and a friend.
Fregene’s football career spanned two decades, during which he became a cornerstone of Nigeria’s national team, the Green Eagles, now known as the Super Eagles.
