The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), Ltd. has made history by becoming the first state-owned oil company to join the United Nations Global Compact, a global initiative aimed at promoting responsible and sustainable corporate policies and practises.
In a brief ceremony held during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), in New York, Mr. Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), of NNPC Ltd., signed the Letter of Commitment, marking the company’s participation in the UN Global Compact.
Mr. Kyari emphasised that NNPC Ltd., as a dynamic global energy company, is committed to working with global partners to achieve a just energy transition. This move aligns with Nigeria’s dedication to the Ten Principles of the United Nations Global Compact, covering human rights, labour, the environment, and anti-corruption measures.
“We are committed to making the UN Global Compact and its principles part of our strategy, culture, and daily operations,” stated Mr. Kyari. He also expressed the company’s readiness to engage in collaborative projects that further the broader development goals of the United Nations, particularly the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Ms. Naomi Nwokolo, the Executive Director of UN Global Compact Network Nigeria, hailed NNPC Ltd.’s decision to participate in the initiative as a pivotal step towards fostering ethical business conduct, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility.
She noted that Nigeria’s transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy would have a significant positive impact on sustainability at local, continental, and global levels.
The United Nations Global Compact, established in July 2000, encourages companies worldwide to develop, implement, and disclose responsible and sustainable corporate policies and practises voluntarily.
NNPC Ltd.’s inclusion signifies a significant milestone and a commitment to responsible corporate citizenship in the global energy sector.
