Senator Ned Nwoko has urged the National Assembly to consider legislation granting civilians the right to own firearms for self-defence.
Representing Delta North Senatorial District and serving on the Senate Committee on Defence, Senator Nwoko emphasized the necessity of comprehensive regulations to ensure responsible ownership.
The proposed bill, currently awaiting its first reading in the Senate, aims to address the pervasive threats and violence plaguing communities across the nation. Senator Nwoko underscored the importance of stringent conditions, including rigorous training, to ensure that firearms are in the hands of responsible individuals capable of handling them safely.
Acknowledging the national discourse surrounding the issue, Senator Nwoko highlighted the need for public engagement in enhancing the country’s safety measures. While acknowledging differing opinions on the matter, he stressed the potential of allowing law-abiding citizens to possess firearms to provide a sense of security against immediate threats.
However, Senator Nwoko emphasized the necessity of balancing this initiative with robust regulations and oversight mechanisms to prioritize public safety. The proposed legislation lays out meticulous vetting process, including endorsements from medical professionals, community leaders, and law enforcement agencies, to ascertain mental fitness, community support, and absence of criminal involvement.
Senator Nwoko reiterated that a strengthened security system, coupled with responsible firearm ownership, could contribute to reducing violent crimes and instilling a sense of empowerment among citizens.
