Nigerian Senate Passes Vote Of Confidence In Senate President Akpabio.
The Nigerian Senate has passed a vote of confidence in Senate President Godswill Akpabio, reaffirming its support for his leadership despite ongoing controversy within the upper legislative chamber.
The decision followed a motion by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, who emphasised the importance of legislative order, transparency, and governance. He addressed concerns surrounding recent events in the Senate, seeking to clarify any misconceptions.
Natasha’s Suspension Sparks Debate
The vote of confidence comes amid a dispute involving Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, who was recently suspended from the Senate. She has since challenged the suspension, describing it as unjust and escalating the matter to the United Nations’ Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on Tuesday.
In response, the Senate formally countered her claims, stating in a letter to the IPU on Wednesday that her suspension was not linked to allegations of sexual harassment but was rather a disciplinary measure for gross misconduct and violations of Senate rules.
During the Senate session, Bamidele stressed that no sexual harassment complaint had ever been formally presented before the Senate, and that the matter referred to the Committee on Ethics and Privileges was solely related to a breach of Senate rules.
Call for Order and Legislative Focus
Bamidele further defended the Senate’s authority to maintain discipline, clarifying that suspension is a lawful tool to prevent disorder within the chamber. He dismissed claims that the Senate had overstepped its constitutional powers.
“There is work before us, and we have done everything possible to ensure that electoral reforms and other legislative matters receive due attention,” Bamidele stated.
As the Senate moves forward, members have been urged to set aside recent disputes and refocus on legislative duties.
