Nigerian Troops Dismantle Bandit Hideout In Taraba, Uncover Detention Cells And Human Skull.

Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Brigade, under Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), have destroyed a major bandit hideout in Southern Taraba, uncovering a chilling scene of four detention cells and a human skull during a two-day clearance operation. The operation, conducted on 19 and 20 June 2025, targeted criminal enclaves in Wukari and Takum Local Government Areas, demonstrating the military’s resolve to restore peace to the region.

Led by Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, the troops from the newly established Forward Operating Base (FOB) Wukari swept through strategic terrains, including river lines, high grounds, and abandoned settlements, based on credible intelligence. At Mande Atsager, identified as the hideout of wanted bandit leader Verior John Gata, the troops encountered hostile fire. Overwhelmed by superior firepower, the bandits fled into the surrounding forest, abandoning their camp. A subsequent search revealed a building containing four in-built detention cells, believed to have been used to hold kidnapped victims awaiting ransom payments. Most disturbingly, a shrine containing a human skull was discovered, suggesting the use of occult practices in support of the gang’s criminal activities.

The operation extended to Ikayior village, known as the base of another notorious criminal, Akiki Utiv, alias “Full Fire.” Troops uncovered and dismantled a bandit camp there, further disrupting the criminal network. Captain Olubodunde Oni, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for 6 Brigade, confirmed that the entire area was cleared, and the camps were destroyed, dealing a significant blow to the bandits’ operations.

The discovery of the detention cells and human skull has sent shockwaves through local communities, highlighting the gruesome nature of bandit activities in the region. The Nigerian Army’s operation not only neutralised immediate threats but also uncovered evidence of the bandits’ reliance on ritual practices, adding a disturbing dimension to their crimes.

Brigadier General Uwa commended the troops for their bravery and professionalism, reiterating the Brigade’s commitment to eliminating criminal threats and ensuring safety in Taraba State. “This operation underscores our determination to root out those who terrorise our communities. We will continue to pursue these criminals relentlessly,” he said. The success of the operation follows the recent inauguration of the FOB in Wukari, designed to strengthen security and prevent the breakdown of law and order in southern Taraba.

Local residents have welcomed the military’s intervention, expressing relief at the dismantling of the bandit camps. Community leaders called for sustained efforts to ensure the region remains free from such threats, while the Catholic Bishop of Jalingo Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Charles Hammawa, urged the federal government to take decisive action against banditry across the Middle Belt, citing recent attacks in neighbouring Benue State.

The Nigerian Army has assured the public that follow-up operations are ongoing to track down fleeing bandits and recover additional weapons. The recovered arms and ammunition are currently in military custody for further investigation, with authorities vowing to bring those responsible for these heinous acts to justice.

This operation marks a critical step in curbing banditry in Taraba, offering hope to residents who have long endured the menace of kidnappings and violence. As the military continues its efforts, the focus remains on restoring lasting peace and security to Southern Taraba and beyond.
