The Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed that recent United States airstrikes on terrorist targets in the North West were carried out as a result of structured security cooperation and intelligence collaboration between Nigeria and its international partners.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government said Nigerian authorities remain actively engaged with international partners, including the United States of America, to address the persistent threat of terrorism and violent extremism. This cooperation, the ministry said, has resulted in precision airstrikes against identified terrorist targets in parts of north-western Nigeria.
Intelligence Sharing and Strategic Coordination
According to the Ministry, the Nigeria–United States security partnership operates in line with established international practice and bilateral understandings. It includes the exchange of intelligence, strategic coordination, and other forms of support aimed at degrading terrorist capabilities.
The Federal Government emphasized that all cooperation is conducted in accordance with international law, mutual respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty, and shared commitments to regional and global security.
Civilian Protection and National Unity Remain Central
Nigeria reiterated that all counter-terrorism efforts are guided by the primacy of protecting civilian lives, safeguarding national unity, and upholding the rights and dignity of all citizens, irrespective of faith or ethnicity.
The government stressed that terrorist violence in any form—whether directed at Christians, Muslims, or other communities—remains an affront to Nigeria’s values and to international peace and security.
Disrupting Terror Networks and Cross-Border Threats
The Federal Government said it will continue working closely with its partners through established diplomatic and security channels to weaken terrorist networks, disrupt their financing and logistics, and prevent cross-border threats.
These efforts, the Ministry noted, are also focused on strengthening Nigeria’s own security institutions and intelligence capabilities to ensure long-term stability and resilience against extremist violence.
FG Assures Continued Engagement and Public Updates
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed its commitment to sustained engagement with relevant international partners and assured that the public will be kept informed through appropriate official channels as counter-terrorism operations and security cooperation continue.
