Retired soldiers, operating under the Nigerian War Veterans Association in Ogun State, have penned an open letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu, highlighting their grievances over the neglect of welfare packages, particularly pensions.
The letter, jointly signed by Fatai Shorinmade, the chairman, and Ogundairo Victor, the secretary of the association, was disseminated to the media in Abeokuta.
In their correspondence, the veterans underscored the potentially demoralising impact of neglecting their welfare on serving soldiers nationwide.
They emphasised the critical need for addressing the welfare concerns of both active duty personnel and retired war veterans, stressing that delayed welfare payments have triggered protests among retired war veterans, signalling a growing apprehension regarding the government’s commitment to fulfilling its obligations to those who have served the nation.
The association implored President Tinubu to give due attention to the welfare of war veterans, recognising that doing so could significantly enhance the morale of the nation’s military forces. While urging the president to prioritise their welfare concerns, the veterans expressed appreciation for his anti-corruption efforts within the country.
Acknowledging President Tinubu’s decisive actions during pivotal moments in Nigeria’s history, the retired soldiers, who collectively served for 35 years in various capacities across the nation before their retirement, commended the ongoing dedication of active-duty soldiers, noting that their steadfastness is yielding tangible results nationwide.
