Nigerians To Face New Fees For Driver’s Licences And Number Plates From June 8, 2025.

The Joint Tax Board (JTB) has approved a new pricing structure for driver’s licences and vehicle number plates, set to take effect from Sunday, 8 June 2025. The announcement, which has sparked widespread discussion, aims to reflect enhanced security features and rising production costs, according to authorities.

Starting tomorrow, the cost of a motor vehicle driver’s licence will rise to ₦15,000 for a three-year validity period, up from previous rates, while a five-year licence will now be priced at ₦21,000. Tricycle and motorcycle operators will also see adjustments, with a three-year licence costing ₦7,000 and a five-year option set at ₦11,000.

The JTB, Nigeria’s apex body for revenue and tax-related matters, has stated that the price hike is necessary to improve the quality and security of these essential identification documents, bringing them in line with international standards. The board has urged all relevant government agencies and motor vehicle licensing authorities to implement the new fees promptly.

In a bid to ensure a smooth transition, the JTB has called on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to engage in robust public sensitisation efforts. Nigerians are advised to apply for or renew their licences and number plates through official channels, such as the National Vehicle Identification System portal (nvis.frsc.gov.ng) or state licensing offices, and to avoid touts to ensure they pay only the approved rates.

While the adjustment has raised concerns among some drivers amid ongoing economic challenges, authorities have emphasised that the updated fees will support better service delivery and enhanced road safety measures. Motorists are encouraged to prepare for the changes and complete necessary applications promptly to avoid delays.
