Nigeria’s U-17 Girls, Flamingos, Gear Up for FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Qualifiers in Mali

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, fondly known as the Flamingos, is set to embark on a crucial journey to Bamako, Mali, as they prepare for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup African qualification series. Their first-leg encounter against Burkina Faso promises to be a thrilling showdown on Saturday.

The Flamingos have showcased their prowess in the competition since its inception in 2008, missing only one edition in Uruguay 2018. With a strong history behind them, they are poised for success in Mali, aiming for a convincing win to set the stage for an easier return leg in Abuja on May 18th.

In their preparation for this crucial match, Head Coach Bankole Olowookere emphasized the importance of converting opportunities during games, despite their impressive 9-1 victory in a preparatory game. Olowookere stressed the need for his players to transition their training sessions’ success into match situations effectively.

In a notable development, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has made adjustments to the match officials for Saturday’s game at the Stade 26 March in Bamako. Originally slated as the fourth official, Joselyn Nsabimana has been replaced by Mali’s Teneba Bagayoko. This change adds local expertise to the officiating team, ensuring a fair and smooth encounter.

The match will be overseen by Burundi’s Suavis Iratunga as the referee, supported by compatriots Fides Bangurambona and Alida Iradukunda as assistant 1 and assistant 2, respectively. Furthermore, Oumou Souleyman Kane from Mauritania and Aya Irene Ahoua from Cote d’Ivoire will serve as the commissioner and referee assessor, enhancing the match’s integrity and compliance with regulations.

As the Flamingos gear up for this crucial qualification match, expectations are high for a spirited performance that will propel them closer to securing their spot in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
