NiHSA Issues Flood Warning As Niger And Benue Rivers Reach Peak Levels

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) has warned that Rivers Niger and Benue have reached their peak, posing a serious risk of flooding to surrounding communities.

The alert was issued on Thursday by NiHSA Director General, Muhammad Umar, who urged residents in flood-prone areas to take proactive measures to protect lives and property.

Umar explained that several tributaries, including Rima, Kaduna, and Gongola, are also at high levels, while major dams such as Kainji, Jebba, Goronyo, and Kiri are spilling excess water. The agency is working closely with dam authorities to reduce the impact on downstream communities.

He further noted that flooding in parts of Adamawa state, particularly Yola and Numan, is being worsened by heavy rainfall and internal runoff, despite Lagdo Dam in Cameroon not spilling. Umar stressed the urgency of preparedness as the peak of the rainy season continues, warning that more areas may be affected if water levels remain high.
