The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a nationwide heatwave alert, warning citizens of the likelihood of heat stress and thunderstorms across various regions of the country on Saturday.
In its Weather Report released in Abuja, NiMet highlighted the soaring heat index over Nigeria, stressing the importance of taking necessary precautions to mitigate the effects.
NiMet has advised the public to stay well-hydrated and to avoid strenuous physical activities, particularly during the peak hours between 12 noon and 4 pm. The agency recommended wearing shades and hats when outdoors, and parents are urged to ensure infants are adequately seated to minimize the impact of the scorching heat.
The day is expected to start with morning thunderstorms in coastal parts of Lagos states, including Niger, Kwara, and Kebbi states, while other parts of the South and the North Central are predicted to experience partly cloudy conditions with intervals of sunshine.
By afternoon and evening hours, there are better prospects of thunderstorms in the southern and north-central regions, including parts of Taraba, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Kebbi states.
NiMet also cautioned about strong winds preceding the rains in areas where thunderstorms are likely to occur, urging the public to take adequate precautions.
Additionally, airline operators are advised to obtain updated weather reports and forecasts to ensure effective planning in their operations.
