NPA Refutes Multi-Billion Naira Corruption Claims, Defends Budget Oversight.
The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has firmly dismissed allegations of multi-billion naira corruption circulating in certain media reports, labelling them as baseless and lacking credibility. In a statement issued yesterday, the NPA, under the leadership of Abubakar Dantsoho, clarified that its budget and expenditure are rigorously monitored by the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, the Budget Office of the Federation, and the National Assembly, rendering claims of financial misapplication implausible.
The authority addressed specific accusations regarding the contract for dredging works at the Warri Escravos Channel, a critical hub for Nigeria’s oil and gas operations. The NPA explained that the dredging was essential to address severe siltation, which threatened international embarrassment and significant investment losses from vessels running aground. The statement emphasised that the contract adhered strictly to emergency procurement procedures outlined in the Procurement Act, 2007, refuting suggestions of impropriety.
Additionally, the NPA defended its procurement of marine crafts, including tugboats and pilot cutters, stating that these acquisitions complied fully with the Procurement Act, 2007. The purchases were driven by the urgent need to bolster national energy security, particularly in support of the government’s initiative to sell crude oil in naira to domestic refiners, which involves extensive offshore operations.
The NPA’s robust response underscores its commitment to transparency and adherence to legal frameworks, as it seeks to dispel misinformation and maintain public confidence in its operations.
