NRC Confirms Agbor Train Derailment Says All Passengers Safe

The Nigerian Railway Corporation has confirmed that a passenger train travelling along the Warri to Itakpe route derailed near Agbor on Saturday evening.

The corporation assured members of the public that there were no injuries or casualties recorded during the incident.

According to the NRC management, the derailment occurred around 7:30pm and affected two out of the seven coaches conveying passengers to their destination. The corporation explained that all passengers on board were safely evacuated and taken to Agbor without any report of harm.

In a statement issued by the Managing Director of the NRC, Kayode Opeifa, the agency revealed that an investigation had begun to determine the immediate cause of the derailment. “We are pleased to confirm that all passengers on board were safely evacuated to Agbor and everyone has been fully accounted for. No casualties or injuries were recorded,” he said.

Opeifa hinted that preliminary findings suggested that the incident may have been connected to possible track vandalism. He noted that the NRC would continue to monitor the situation and work with relevant authorities to ensure the safety of rail operations across the country. He added that further updates would be provided once the investigation is concluded.

The NRC confirmed that its emergency response and recovery team, supported by security personnel, were deployed to the scene immediately to remove the affected coaches and restore the track. Opeifa stated that “retrieval efforts are progressing steadily and expected to be completed as soon as possible to allow normal train services to resume.”

The corporation reassured Nigerians that it remains committed to improving the safety and reliability of rail transportation. It also urged the public to support security efforts by reporting suspicious activities around railway infrastructure to prevent future incidents.
