The National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu on Monday held an emergency meeting with Service Chiefs and heads of security and intelligence agencies in Abuja following the recent remarks by United States President Donald Trump suggesting possible military action against Nigeria.
The meeting took place at the National Counter Terrorism Centre as the Federal Government moved to assess the situation and coordinate a response.
Trump had accused the Nigerian government of failing to protect Christians from attacks and hinted that the US could intervene militarily. His comment, which sparked global reactions, has drawn strong concerns within Nigeria’s security circle. The meeting was called to review the implications of Trump’s statement and evaluate the country’s preparedness to respond diplomatically and strategically.
According to security sources, the emergency session focused on intelligence reviews, security implications and a possible unified national response to the claims. One security source said the meeting was necessary to ensure “Nigeria remains firm in safeguarding its sovereignty and handling the situation with caution to avoid escalation.”
It was gathered that different security scenarios were discussed including border security, potential external interference and domestic stability. The officials explored coordinated strategies to maintain peace in the country while also managing international pressure resulting from Trump’s remarks.
Reports also indicated that the development has already triggered ripple effects across neighbouring countries. Following the US threat, the government of Chad announced the temporary closure of its borders with Nigeria to avoid spillover of tension in the region. The move has further raised regional security concerns.
The outcome of the meeting was not immediately disclosed as the NSA’s office said a formal statement would be issued after further consultations. Nigerians are expected to receive an official update once the government reaches a conclusive position on the matter.
