NSC and NRA Unite To Elevate Officiating Standards In Domestic Football League.

In what can be described as a bold move to enhance the quality of officiating in Nigeria’s domestic football league, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has engaged with the Nigeria Referees Association (NRA). This initiative was highlighted in a recent meeting between NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko and NRA President Sani Zubairu.

Chairman Dikko expressed a strong commitment to improving local sports content, underscoring the pivotal role of referees in the growth of the domestic league. “We are placing so much emphasis on growing our local contents,” Dikko stated. “The great Pele once said that a country’s national team is as good as the league. So whatever we are doing globally in football, what rubs off directly on our economy is the domestic league. We are measured by the success of our league.”

He further elaborated on the importance of officiating, “The officiating is key to having the quality of league we are craving for. This is why occasional interface with the NRA is very necessary.” Dikko highlighted past collaborations during his tenure with the league, where he supported referees’ developmental programs, providing them with official uniforms and other logistics to elevate their performance standards.

In response, President Zubairu of the NRA commended the ongoing efforts and pledged full cooperation towards achieving the NSC’s vision for the league. “So far so good,” Zubairu remarked. “We will say that our officiating in the league has been so good as we are entering the halfway mark. We have come to meet with the NSC Chairman, who is our overall boss of sports in Nigeria and a key member of the family that understands the issues.”

Zubairu also expressed confidence in Dikko’s leadership, citing his extensive experience not only within the league but also with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and FIFA. “I have come to congratulate him and wish him all the best in this new assignment which we all know and believe he is very capable and competent to deliver,” he added, promising further formal engagements to discuss detailed strategies for improvement.

This partnership between the NSC and NRA is seen as a crucial step towards revitalising Nigeria’s football scene, aiming to produce a league that not only entertains but also competes on a higher international level, contributing significantly to the sports economy of Nigeria.
