On Monday, less than two hours after a report surfaced about a competition between President Obama and President Biden, former President Barack Obama met with the United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
The meeting, which took place at Sunak’s residence in London, marks Obama’s first in-person encounter with Sunak since the latter assumed office as prime minister.
Obama, who described the meeting as a “courtesy visit,” was seen leaving Sunak’s residence on Monday afternoon, providing no further details about the nature of their discussions. The timing of the meeting is particularly noteworthy, coming just hours after the emergence of a report detailing a purported decade-long rivalry between Obama, Biden, and their respective aides.
According to the report, Biden aides have voiced grievances alleging that Obama and his team failed to fully acknowledge Biden’s experience in areas such as foreign policy, congressional affairs, and political diplomacy. Some former Biden aides claimed that there was a perception among Obama loyalists that Biden would not excel as president and lacked the organizational skills necessary for effective governance.
In response to these claims, White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates refuted any suggestion of friction between Biden and Obama, asserting that Biden holds Obama in high regard, describing him as “family.” Bates stated the close personal bond between the two leaders and stated their shared commitment to addressing key issues facing the nation, including economic revitalization, safeguarding freedoms, and defending democracy.
