Ogun State Declares 20 August Public Holiday To Celebrate Isese Day.
The Ogun State Government has announced that Tuesday, 20 August 2025, will be observed as a public holiday to mark this year’s Isese Day. The declaration, made by the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun, underscores the state’s commitment to promoting religious inclusivity and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people.
In a statement issued by Hon. Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, the government highlighted the significance of Isese Day as a time to honour Yoruba traditions and spiritual practices. The public holiday will provide traditional worshippers across the state with the opportunity to engage in cultural and religious activities, fostering a deeper appreciation of Yoruba heritage.
Isese Day, which celebrates the Yoruba religion and its traditions, was first recognised as a public holiday in Ogun State in 2023, following a resolution passed by the Ogun State House of Assembly. The motion, titled ‘H.R. No.008/OG/2023 – Observation of Isese Day as Free Day in Ogun State,’ received the approval of Governor Abiodun, marking a significant milestone for the Yoruba traditional community. Since then, 20 August has been set aside annually to celebrate the values and teachings inherent in Yoruba spiritual beliefs.
The statement from the government noted that the establishment of Isese Day as a public holiday reflects Governor Abiodun’s recognition of the vital role Yoruba heritage plays in shaping the state’s cultural identity. “Isese Day serves as an opportunity for adherents of the Yoruba religion to honour their ancestors, engage in traditional practices, and promote the values embedded in their spiritual beliefs,” the statement read. It further emphasised that the celebration fosters unity among practitioners and encourages the broader society to respect and appreciate the diversity of Nigeria’s cultural tapestry.
This year’s declaration aligns with similar moves in neighbouring Lagos State, where Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has also designated 20 August 2025 as a public holiday for public servants to commemorate Isese Day. The coordinated recognition of the day across states highlights the growing acknowledgement of traditional Yoruba practices in Nigeria’s public sphere.
The Ogun State Government has called on residents to use the holiday to reflect on the importance of cultural preservation and mutual respect for all religious and spiritual practices.
