Oil Spill In Ikata Community Raises Alarm In Rivers State.
A fresh oil spill has struck the Ikata community in Ahoada East Local Government Area, Rivers State, igniting fears among residents and environmental groups about the escalating ecological damage in the region. The incident, reported in the early hours of Monday, 5 May 2025, has once again highlighted the persistent environmental challenges plaguing Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta.
The spill is believed to have originated from a 14-inch pipeline along the Okordia-Rumuekpe right of way, operated by Renaissance Africa Energy Company Ltd (RAEC). RAEC, a consortium of Nigerian oil and gas companies, recently acquired the pipeline as part of a $2.4 billion divestment deal from Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC). Local reports suggest the pipeline may have been vandalised, with crude oil spewing into surrounding farmlands and waterways, causing widespread contamination.
The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria), a prominent environmental group, confirmed the spill through its Crude Oil Spill Alert System (COSAS) and One Million Youth Volunteers Network. In a statement issued in Port Harcourt, YEAC’s Executive Director, Dr Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, described the scene: “Video and photographic evidence show crude oil gushing from the compromised pipeline, soaking the surrounding landscape.” He noted that volunteers visiting the site observed signs of vandalism, with the ground excavated around the pipeline.
The spill has devastated local farmlands and polluted rivers, threatening the livelihoods of farmers and fishermen in Ikata. “This is a disaster for our community,” said a resident, who requested anonymity. “Our crops are ruined, and the rivers we depend on for fishing and drinking water are now contaminated. We need urgent action.
In response, Renaissance Africa Energy Company Ltd has taken swift measures. On Tuesday, 6 May 2025, the company’s spokesman, Mr Michael Adande, announced that crude oil feed into the 14-inch Okordia-Rumuekpe pipeline had been halted to limit further environmental damage. “We are working closely with regulators to convene a Joint Investigative Visit (JIV) to determine the cause, volume, and impact of the spill,” Adande said. The JIV, a statutory probe involving operators, regulators, and host communities, is expected to provide clarity on the incident.
YEAC-Nigeria has called on the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) to expedite the JIV and invoke relevant provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021 to hold those responsible accountable. “We urge NOSDRA to act swiftly to ascertain the root cause and ensure justice for the affected community,” Dr Fyneface stated.
The incident follows another oil spill reported just two weeks ago in Ogale community, Eleme Local Government Area, underscoring the recurring environmental crises in Rivers State. Pipeline vandalism and oil theft remain pervasive issues in the Niger Delta, despite ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s oil sector. The region has suffered decades of ecological degradation, with communities bearing the brunt of pollution while struggling for adequate remediation and compensation.
As the Ikata community grapples with the fallout, environmentalists and residents alike are calling for stronger measures to prevent future spills and protect the Niger Delta’s fragile ecosystem. “This cannot continue,” Dr Fyneface warned. “The people of Ikata and the wider Niger Delta deserve a cleaner, safer environment.”
Efforts to reach NOSDRA and the Rivers State Police for comment were unsuccessful at the time of reporting. The outcome of the JIV is eagerly awaited, as the community looks to RAEC and regulatory authorities for immediate relief and long-term solutions.
