Oladips Recounts Detention Experience With EFCC

Nigerian rapper Oladips has shared his experience with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC, narrating how he was arrested and detained under what he described as troubling conditions.

The artiste said the incident left him traumatised and raised questions about how suspects are treated during investigations.

Speaking in an interview, Oladips explained that EFCC operatives stormed his Lagos apartment at about 3 am. He said “It was around 3 AM when they broke my kitchen door and gained access to my apartment.” According to him, he had heard the operatives were in the estate searching other homes but was not worried because he had no involvement in fraud.

He revealed that the officials searched his house and demanded his laptop but he only had two mobile phones. Oladips said he was taken to the EFCC office for questioning and when no evidence of fraud was found the officials shifted attention to tax related issues. He recounted spending five days in what he described as a “very smelly cell” before being granted bail.

The rapper added that he had to pay millions of naira before securing his release. He said fellow artiste Zlatan Ibile sent him food daily throughout his detention and offered moral support. Oladips noted “I would have sued the EFCC but you know how the system is I would just keep spending money.”

Responding to the allegations, the EFCC said it takes the claims of extortion seriously and has launched an internal investigation to verify the facts. The commission stated that the allegations do “not reflect the true picture” of its operations and confirmed that the officers involved have been withdrawn from operational duties pending the outcome of the probe.

The incident has continued to trigger public debate on the conduct of law enforcement agencies. Many Nigerians say the case highlights the importance of protecting the rights of suspects during investigations and ensuring that anti graft measures do not violate human dignity.
